MedOptions To Offer New Telehealth Service

Telehealth

Need: Rural nursing homes can be at a disadvantage, as many have difficulty providing adequate specialty behavioral healthcare to residents. Nursing homes in rural areas typically rely on primary care physicians to treat patients. These physicians may be overloaded or lack extensive training in behavioral health related issues, which can result in patients being misdiagnosed or not diagnosed at all. In many cases, if a rural patient is in need of a behavioral health exam, the patient will have to travel to the closest facility that provides this service, which is often a long distance away.  Across the nation there is a huge shortage of licensed behavioral health providers. Coupled with an increasing population residing in rural areas making it extremely difficult to access specialty behavioral health care.

Intervention: In order to ensure rural nursing homes have the vital access to specialized behavioral health healthcare, MedOptions has initiated Telehealth services to its rural nursing home partners. MedOptions realizes that offering the best access to quality health care in the 21st century requires 21st century technologies. Telehealth is a critical solution that will allow us to bring our world-class clinicians to our patients in long-term care facilities across the nation. These visits will be conducted through a HIPAA secured video conferencing technology which, will dramatically reduce costs and increase access to behavioral health services to a remote and often frail population.
