Happy National Doctor’s Day!
On the 30th of March each year, National Doctor’s Day reminds us all to take a moment to reflect on all the ways in which physicians make a difference in our lives, and appreciate the doctors we know and work alongside.
On March 30, 1842, a physician named Dr. Crawford Long first used anesthetic during surgery. In 1933, the wife of a prominent doctor in Georgia, chose March 30th as a date to recognize doctors, celebrate their achievements in the medical field, and show appreciation by mailing cards to the doctors she knew and placing flowers on the graves of deceased physicians. The US Congress passed a proclamation in 1990 to officially declare March 30th National Doctor’s Day.
Psychiatry is a specialty field that dates back to the late eighteenth century, but geriatric psychiatry is a very young sub-specialty by comparison, beginning in the mid-1970’s. In 1978, the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry was founded, and the first geropsychiatric hospital unit was opened up by pioneer Norman White, MD, in Rochester, New Hampshire in 1984.
Today, MedOptions employs 52 doctors who specialize in geriatric psychiatry. Our doctors hold various positions – most provide direct clinical services to residents and work as part of incredible clinical teams, and some also have important leadership positions in this organization. MedOptions is proud to have so many physicians with the passion and drive to work with this incredibly important, and fast-growing field.
On behalf of the entire MedOptions team, we want to say a resounding Thank You to all of the doctors we employ, work with, and have the pleasure of knowing! Happy Doctor’s Day!
