Celebrating National Nurses Week
Everybody knows it — the nurses in our lives make a world of difference. Whether we have nurses in our family or friend group, work alongside them, or have been taken care of by them personally, there is no question that the nursing profession is filled with some of the most exceptional, skilled, and courageous people. This week is National Nurses Week, and we are glad to be taking time to recognize and celebrate the many incredible nurses around us.
Nursing’s origins began in the mid-19th century, but the establishment of nursing as a respected profession is traditionally associated with Florence Nightingale (5/12/1820-8/13/1910). She was a pioneer who believed in the power of arming a nurse with science and education, and her epic success treating soldiers during the Crimean War revolutionized the field of nursing. Accordingly, the end date of National Nurses Week is permanently set on May 12th, which is Florence Nightingale’s birthday.
The theme for Nurses Week 2018 is: “Nurses: Inspire. Innovate. Influence.” This truly encompasses the breadth of the nursing profession, the many roles that nurses have, and ways that they contribute to the nation’s health and wellbeing. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were almost 3 million registered nurses working in the United States in 2016, and job growth from 2016-2026 is projected to be an impressive 15%. Nurses provide and coordinate clinical care for patients in hospitals, schools, residential facilities, clinics, correctional facilities, and the military. Nurses can also work in public health, administration, advocacy, public policy consulting, research, and education.
MedOptions is very proud to employ 213 nurses. The majority of our employees who are in the nursing profession are nurse practitioners, meaning they have had extensive education and training in their specialty, and they diagnose and treat medical conditions which includes prescribing medications. Our nurse practitioners are an integral part of our multidisciplinary teams, providing their expertise and collaborating with other clinicians to ensure that our residents receive the very best care.
There is no question that nurses are indispensable. Their passion, mission, and unwavering commitment to our collective health and wellbeing is unparalleled. Let’s all take a moment to pause and reflect on the difference that the nurses in our lives make, and give them all the recognition and celebration they deserve! Happy National Nurses Week from all of us at MedOptions!
“I am of certain convinced that the greatest heroes are those who do their duty in the daily grind of domestic affairs while whilst the world whirls as a maddening dreidel.” -Florence Nightingale
